چکیده
Abstract The paragenesis of carbonate pseudomorphic textures in the rock record that are inferred to represent replaced metastable ikaite (CaCO3·6H2O), which forms at frigid temperatures, is uncertain. Petrographic analysis Mono Lake (California, USA) Pleistocene tufas allowed recognition a distinctive calcite microtexture, termed guttulatic calcite, during dehydration and diagnostic for precursor ikaite. texture characterized by pseudo-hexagonal or spherical low-Mg cores, likely formed initially as vaterite, with an ellipsoidal overgrowth, secondary high-Mg sparry micritic cement. Observations pseudomorphs, combined review more ancient examples, indicate records can be used infer paleotemperatures.

متن کاملMicrobial mediated formation of Fe-carbonate minerals under extreme acidic conditions
Discovery of Fe-carbonate precipitation in Rio Tinto, a shallow river with very acidic waters, situated in Huelva, South-western Spain, adds a new dimension to our understanding of carbonate formation. Sediment samples from this low-pH system indicate that carbonates are formed in physico-chemical conditions ranging from acid to neutral pH. Evidence for microbial mediation is observed in second...
متن کاملIncorporation of Eu(III) into Calcite under Recrystallization conditions
The interaction of calcite with trivalent europium under recrystallization conditions was studied on the molecular level using site-selective time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS). We conducted batch studies with a reaction time from seven days up to three years with three calcite powders, which differed in their specific surface area, recrystallization rates and impurities cont...
متن کاملSurface Structure and Morphology of Calcium Carbonate Polymorphs Calcite, Aragonite, and Vaterite: An Atomistic Approach
Atomistic simulation techniques have been employed to investigate the effect of molecular adsorption of water on the low-index surfaces of calcite, aragonite, and vaterite. Calculated surface and hydration energies agree with experiment and previous calculations where available. Known experimental surface features are reproduced, i.e., 1 × 1 symmetry and structural features of the calcite {101h...
